The RE is responsible of updating this table in all installed PFE. Also referred as FIB - Forwarding information base. Contains all the active (best) routes from the RT.
Also referred as RIB - Routing information base. It is located in the RE and updated by routing protocols. It has three primary functions: switch data between the line cards, control the chassis, and house the routing engine (RE is usually inserted into this card). Implements various services such as policing, stateless firewall filtering, and class of service. Uses Layer 2 and Layer 3 forwarding tables to forward traffic toward its destination. PFE - Packet Forwarding Engine, the intelligent component of the forwarding plane.It is a set of linecards interconnected by a switch fabric, that together represent the forwarding plane (also called the data plane). The internal link has a built-in rate limiter that is not configurable and protects against DoS attacks. Processes exception traffic (routing protocol updates, management traffic for the RE an packets with IP options). Has a kernel, it is an x86 with flash, SSD and RAM.
